Day 18

I got to St Magnus Cathedral when it opened at 9am. Building started in the twelfth century. The architecture is impressive.
I also looked at the Bishop's palace
and the Earl's palace, both now in ruins.
I then cycled up Wideford hill with great views all round. This is looking northwest to the Bay of Firth.
I was heading to the Neolithic chambered cairn on the hill. The original entrance is at the front,
crawling through this tunnel.
Now the entrance is through a hole in the top.
This takes you down to the main chamber which has three side chambers accessible through tunnels.
There were great views to the north over Shapinsay island as I cycled back down to Kirkwall.
After lunch in a cafe, I headed down to Scapa beach and found a sheltered spot to sit in the sun.
A dog like ours reminded me it was almost time to head home.
Time for one last Jalfrezi before waiting at the ferry port! The ferry to Aberdeen leaves just before midnight and gets in at 7am. Then it's four trains to get home. The adventure continues but on public transport!
I have cycled over 530 miles. I will check the total and post some maps of the route when I get home. In due course I will produce a video.
Many thanks to all the people who have supported me in so many ways. Apologies if I haven't responded to all your kind messages, it's been hard keeping track of them all and I haven't yet worked out how to comment on the blog though some of you have!
